Houston, we have problem: Newly enhanced images and audio reveal the Apollo 13 crew preparing to return to Earth after the spacecraft's oxygen tank ruptured – on the 50th anniversary of the ill-fated Moon mission

Newly restored images have been released to commemorate 50 years since the Apollo 13 space mission undertook a miraculous return to Earth despite an on-board explosion, which inspired the famous line 'Houston we've had a problem'. British image specialist Andy Saunders has given the images greater clarity by 'stacking' frames on top of each other, taken from 16mm moving film captured by the crew. The images show the remarkably calm NASA crew members – Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert – after the explosion that put their lives in jeopardy. 50 years on, surviving crew members Jim Lovell (main image, left) and Fred Haise (right) who never made it to the moon, have hailed the teamwork that enabled them to return safely to Earth. The incredible story was brought to the big screen in 1995 by Ron Howard in the film of the same name starring Tom Hanks and Bill Paxton (insert left).
