What happens when the government runs out of money? That’s what’s going on right now in the United States and this is the breakdown of what government shutdowns really means and how we got here and what it all means and what the stakes are. A government shutdown occurs when the United States Congress fails to pass or the president refuses to sign a spending bill needed to keep the federal government running. Under the law, specifically the Anti-Deficiency Act, the federal agencies cannot spend more money if appropriation hasn’t been granted to do so.

In short, no funding equals many operations come to a halt or are scaled back dramatically. As of 12.01 a.m. October 1st, 2025, the United States federal government officially shut down because lawmakers couldn’t agree on the funding for the fiscal 2026 year. The deadline stems from disagreements over spending levels, health insurance subsidies, and other policy riders.

Non-essential federal employees were furloughed and sent home without pay. Others continued to, they’re called essential employees by the way, they continue to work but they many are not being paid but will be paid when they return to work and we’re seeing with the air traffic controllers patient is running short on that. Many government services and programs are now suspended for the last what 27-28 days but may not and those people again may not be able to go to like visitor centers, national parks.

I saw a story on a sideline here in the Daily Mail how people are base jumping now in Yosemite National Park off the most deadly face rock cliffs you could be doing it on. Somebody I think already died a few weeks ago in Yosemite trying to climb doing a live broadcast or podcast. The long-term effects is that the longer the shutdown lasts the greater the ripple on our household incomes as well.

What we depend upon because things when the government shuts down some things are going to be needed by everybody that the government cannot do. Now I am one to believe something that Elon Musk made a statement about and I somewhat agree. I don’t understand what a non-essential employee is.

In my company and my wife’s company we have no such thing as non-essential employees but the government seems to be filled with non-essential employees. I think a good start that the government could do during the shutdown at least the Trump administration could do. For example they could get rid of the 86,000 new IRS agents I believe that are still there that the Biden administration hired.

By that they could even get rid of a lot more because let’s put it this way why don’t we try to trust the American people let them do their taxes like they always do and we’ll take in what we got. What the people cheat on in their taxes I guess. Democrats will have a lot less money to spend on boondoggle projects when they take control of which probably is going to happen.

But the other thing I’ll tell you from my point of view I would gut the people that work for the EPA. There’s a lot of budget money there and it’s all a waste and OSHA. These people are not really helping you.

I know the liberals want to tell you that if you didn’t have an FDA and you didn’t have an EPA you would be in danger. Well I’m going to tell you a story about the FDA that you probably do have no concept about. The FDA doesn’t do inspections for the most part.

My brother worked at the Nestle company and my father did too for many many years. For the most part they self-inspected themselves and reported to the FDA. The FDA took what Nestle said was the results of their testing.

They didn’t come there themselves to test. In fact if there was any outside testing of the plant according to my brother it was done by the people that were they were producing private label for. I won’t mention that because that might be something I could be sued over.

But they private labeled for a lot of major companies. A lot of times you’re buying something that the seasoning was actually produced by Nestle. That was one of their biggest if not their biggest business in the world at one time.

And so those people that they’re selling to would sometimes send inspectors. But even because Nestle’s made kosher things even the rabbis didn’t inspect for cleanliness they just made sure things were done in the in kosher standards. And they admitted one admitted to my brother you know we’re trusting you that you’re doing the right thing here.

So the trust is it falls back on the company and the company really doesn’t want to be sued too often. I do admit that maybe there should be more regulation in the future to come. But right now most government agencies that have non-essential employees I think they should be gutted.

I have to tell you that. But that doesn’t mean government should be shut down. Doesn’t mean we don’t need air traffic controllers.

It doesn’t mean that we doesn’t we don’t need a military paid for. I understand you might think that well government shutdowns are just political theater. What is it going to matter to me? Well I guess if you’re a federal employee it matters a lot.

And we if we put four five six seven hundred thousand or maybe a million people on the unemployment rolls because they’re not needed that might that might hurt the economy somewhat. And what the economies are any already in a really bad state. But local economies also this is something that’s very important that local economies often depend on federal workers or services in their area.

I mean around the military base for example restaurants and and stores and shopping centers. Most of their business are soldiers and soldiers wives. Well the same thing happens around even secular type I shouldn’t say secular I’m looking for the right word a non-military type government employees.

I mean when they have a let’s say you have a a major government business I’m trying to think of something like the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. Well they got a lot of workers there so they got to go eat somewhere they got to go. So when they’re not working and they’re staying home they might get paid later on.

But the people the little guy the little businessman the business woman out there all of a sudden they’re not getting employees I’m sorry the customers showing up and so they start laying off their employees because they’re not getting the normal sales force coming down through buying things from them. And so they might start laying off cooks and waiters and waitresses or in stores they might lay off store personnels in your downtown malls and because the government people are home you got to realize and this is big a big time especially around Washington D.C. where there’s just tens of thousands of employees that are staying home having no money they’re not going to the supermarket to buy that much food because they’re they’re out of money they might buy essential foods. So I would assume around any place there is federal workers right now you’re having supermarkets grocery grocery stores of any type little mom and pop hardware stores as well as your big Macy’s and Nordstrom’s and malls and and and restaurants all really suffering from a shutdown.

So it does it does matter to some people I just want to say that right now. But going on this is supposed to be a 7-Eleven short show and I ran over time but I’m just telling you in short a government shutdown is just more than headlines in political theater. It’s a disruption a disruption of the government and it is a sign that you have a sick political system right now between the two parties and something has to be done about it and there should not be a such thing as government shutdowns.

It’s that simple and uh hopefully someday maybe we’ll get people in Congress and we’ll get people in the presidency who do not just want to play games with the American people and their pocketbooks because that is what’s going on right now.

This is Bob Barney for a little longer than normal 7-Eleven short show saying thank you for listening. Bye-bye.
