This is Bob Barney with The Plain Truth Today, and we’re going to talk about a life sentence prison term for a profession that might surprise you. This is a profession that once you decide to go into it, you are going to find out that it is a life sentence…and you’re going to die in prison doing it.

What am I talking about? I’m talking about self-employment…yes, owning your own small business in America.

The other day I was talking to another business owner who is also in the paint business like my wife and myself, and he’s 83 years old. He goes to work seven days a week. He gets there at about 7.30 in the morning, and he goes home at about 5.30 to 7.30 at night. He does this seven days a week. He also lives in a million-dollar mansion where he sleeps…and he spends the rest of his waking hours in a cramped office at his paint business.

We were talking about it, and I said, you know what? Owning your own small business is actually worse than murdering somebody.

When you murder somebody, you get life in prison however, nowadays with the modern legal system, you probably serve 20, 25 years and you’re out but when you decide you want to have your own small business, guess what? You’re going to serve a lifetime prison sentence. You’re going to be running that business until someday you drop dead sitting at your desk running that business, and then someone else is going to have the benefit of reaping what you worked so hard to attain. Most likely they will be selling your business off to some other big company, getting a lot of money and running away to some desert island somewhere.

I think anybody out there listening who owns their own business understands exactly what I’m talking about in our program today.

If you do not have your own business and you work for the government especially, you don’t have a clue about small businesspeople and what they go through. You have no concept about what they go through with all of the government regulations, with the IRS, with OSHA, and with the EPA. If you’re in my kind of business, people in government are the problem of small business, but even if you work for a company, even if you work for a small business and you’ve never owned it yourself, you probably do not even understand the problems of running a small business.

There are all of the permits you have to have, the paperwork you have to do, and all of the things that take all of your day and all of your time.

You don’t just run your business. You don’t go to work every day and tell people what to do and then oversee things…no… then you have to spend two or three hours a day doing paperwork. Then you got to spend an hour or so a day doing government filings of certain things, be it your taxes or if you’re in a regulated business like I am, to fill out your regulation forms, to keep up to date with everything. Then, you know, if you’re a successful business, you probably get anywhere from 75 to 150 emails a day just to you. Of course, your business is probably getting 10 times that many emails that you have employees reading, you know, the info at suchandsuch.com. That usually is handled by some employee, but then you have your own personal email accounts. I have five emails. Of course, one that you may know is ThePlainTruth at AOL.com is my personal email. I have a personal one for my family members and I have the Tamco Paint email, bob.tamcopaint.com and bobbarneyattamcopaint.com for a select few exporters and importers. So every day I go through 75 to 150 emails in the morning. It takes about an hour.

A lot of its junk mail that I have to delete, and of course, spam and stuff like that, but then in the afternoon I probably have another 40 or 50 I have to do. Then again, before I go to bed, I have another 30 or 40 emails to go through and decide if I’m going to keep some for the morning because by 8pm at night, I’m tired. I get up very early in the morning and work out and go into a sauna to try to keep myself healthy so I can serve out this life sentence in long form. I want to serve as many years as possible at this lifetime prison sentence of owning my own business.

Then it starts all over again the next morning.

Now for me, unlike my friend who has a paint business across the street from me who works seven days a week, I follow God, and I do take the Sabbath day off. We do not answer the phone. We do not do any work on the Sabbath day and we have people that work for us that honestly manhandle all of the general and tech calls that come in on the Saturdays, but Sunday my wife and I are back answering the telephone again because we don’t have employees there on Sunday and it is our business that we are running.

Yes, business in America today is not how business in America was like one hundred years ago when someone could actually raise a family, have quality time, time for themselves and even time for vacations. Today, when you own a business, you’re working as a slave for the big brother government. You’re doing all their paperwork for them and you’re paying your taxes many times. You’re paying five or six times more taxes than the average person. People don’t even realize you have local and state sales taxes that you have to pay. You have property taxes on your business, and you have personal property of all the equipment that you own and the buildings that you rent or own that you have to pay on. You are just supporting this entire beast that we call the federal and state and local governments and that’s all your private business that is doing that.

Your small companies, 75% of all people employed in the United States of America are working for a small family business. It’s the backbone of the United States and I’ll tell you from someone who has done this his entire life, it is a prison sentence and it’s a job that has no gratitude from anyone. You and me, we are doing a service, and we are employing people and we are keeping the economy going. We are keeping it going even though we work constantly until the day we walk into our business someday as a 70, 80, or 90 year old man and fall asleep at our desk and never wake up.

So yes, having a small business today in America is worse than getting a life prison sentence for murdering someone because you’ll probably be out in 10, 15 years and some of these liberal states you’ll be out quicker than that.

Well that’s my take for today on the Plain Truth Today broadcast. I’m glad you’re listening. Please tune in again and we’ll have another show on the Plain Truth Today. This is Bob Barney saying thank you and I appreciate you. Bye-bye.
