image from wp.production.patheos.comI know many Christians in the world understand that Jesus Christ, a Jew, followed the Old Testament (Mosaic) holidays.  Probably fewer comprehend that for nearly 100 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus, His followers still observed the same holy days.

One of these annual Holy Days is called in English “The Day of Atonement.”  It is a very solemn 24-hour period of time over 2 calendar days, when we are to “deny ourselves.”  This means to fast- or abstain from food and water for the 24-hour period.  The Day of Atonement does not occur on one day, as the Jews, and most of the observant Christians think it does!  Just a simple reading of scripture proves this. Many have read Leviticus 23:27 “The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves and present a food offering to the LORD.” and assume that it is. However, when one understands that God’s day begins at dawn, the next few verses become very clear. “It is a day of sabbath rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.”

Clearly, if the day began in the evening, the writer would not say that the fast starts on the evening of the 9th!  It would have been, the evening of the 10th!  NOWHERE ARE EVENING DAYS JUSTIFIED IN YOUR BIBLE!  Any honest biblical scholar knows that the Bible shows the day beginning with LIGHT. “Let there be light”- and the first day began!

Clearing up the misconception of the true calendar, why do Christians observe this Holy Day? The answer is simple. They are following the example of Jesus Christ, His apostles, and the true Church of God of the first century! The church of the Apostles continued to observe the annual holy days established by God in the Old Testament, including the Day of Atonement for over a hundred years, until a great FALSE CHURCH in Rome changed it! They claimed the right to do so! “The Pope has the power to change times, to abrogate laws, and to dispense with all things, even the precepts of Christ.” “The Pope has the authority and often exercised it, to dispense with the command of Christ.” -Decretal, de Tranlatic Episcop. Cap. (The Pope can modify divine law.) Ferraris’ Ecclesiastical Dictionary.

image from www.cofac.orgOn the Day of Atonement, Christians humble themselves before God by fasting, remembering the awesome sacrifice of the Lamb of God, the Messiah, Jesus Christ, whose blood atoned for our sins. The Hebrew word for Atonement literally means “to cover over.” Our death penalty has been paid for us, and our sins have been buried, or “covered over.” In ancient times, the high priest enacted a fascinating, meaning-laden ritual of purification and atonement for his sins and the sins of the people. Study Leviticus the 16th chapter to understand all the types. Two goats were to be presented by the priest before God. One was “for the Eternal,” and the other an Azazel, called a “scapegoat.” The Azazel goat was to have all the sins of Israel symbolically placed upon its head, and then was to be led in the hands of a “fit man” who would not allow the goat to turn back into the distant wilderness, where it would be released. Contrary to popular belief, this goat represent Satan and NOT CHRIST!  God’s gracious act of love toward us, is taking our sins (forgiving them through the blood of Christ-the first goat) and placing them on our scapegoat— SATAN!  Yes, we blame Statn for our sins, but in reality, most of our sins are OUR SINS, not Satan’s!  Satan just gets the punishment fore them, hence Satan is our scapegoat!

In the New Testament we read, “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood He entered once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us…” (Hebrews 9:7-12).

Paul wrote, “Moreover He sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

image from wp.production.patheos.com

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

“It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

“For Christ is not entered into the holy place made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

“Nor yet that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year [on the Day of Atonement!] with blood of others…but now once in the end of the world [age] hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” (Hebrews 9:21-28).

image from www.ingodsimage.comAs you can see from Paul’s example, to understand Christ’s mission for us, we have to understand the Holy Days that Christ Himself created!  Christ is the LORD of the Old Testament, not God the Father!  These Holidays were made to show the way to HIS EARTHLY MISSION! Without these days, we cannot understand the gift of God!

We are to follow this day, like all of the Holy Days, not in remembrance of ancient Israel, but as a tribute to the God who freed our souls from death!

This is way we do the Fast CHEERFULLY and with a solemnity as well.

  1. Hi Bob,
I too am taking part in Atonement today/tomorrow evening! Many – as you have already noted are following the wrong days I am following the Zadok Priestly Calendar (by Prohecy Vine).
I have a request – please can you refer to the Messiah as Yahusha not J E S U S and also our Heavenly Father as YAHUAH or Elohim not G O D which both J E S U S and G O D are the Pagan name Rome gave him! And our Father’s name is YAHUAH – Yahusha said ‘I come in my Father’s name’ the S standing for Salvation – literally translates YAHUAH saves! People will say the name doesn’t matter just like keeping His Laws – the name MATTERS – many times throughout scripture it says call on His Name or My Name – YAHUAH means ‘I AM THAT I AM’ – if I called you Brian, you initially would not answer and if I called you Brian again – you would correct me! So lets pay all Respect to our Father and our Big Brother by using their correct names – the Pagan names are ‘titles’. Also, Yahusha did not die on a cross (you know this as you have referred to the pagan dierty Tamuz) the symbol was meant as mock (Father is not mocked) to Yahusha in that they nailed him to a cross which just happens to be a T which represents Tammuz. Yahusha died on a tree – for a good bible that puts ALL the original Hebrew names back – I would recommend Halleluyah Scriptures – you can even receive a free copy though if you can afford to pay, please do so as it helps them give free bibles to the poor around the world.

Also – while the other nations are ‘grafted in’ remember Yahusha said ‘I come for the lost sheep of Israel’ which actually, if you study relates to the 12 tribes (not just the 10 – because some of Yahuda and Benjamin and Levi were scattered) and they were known as the Gentiles! Not Christians and other nations!

So yes – if the other nations cling to Yashar’el (Israel) and keep the commandments and the statutes etc, they will be accepted into the Kingdom through Yahusha – tho the 12 tribes ‘inherits’ them.

I’ve been struggling with finding a community here in the UK even online to try and come together – I found your site when I was looking to fellowship for Feast of Trumpets last week and came upon your site. So if you have any live videos/podcasts for tonight/tomorrow or next week for the Feast of Tabernacles please let me know. By the way FOT only day 1 and day 8 is High Sabbath! The in between days you are permitted to work only you are to eat/sleep in your tent – booth etc for the duration.

Blessings and luv and All Praises to The Most High YAHUAH.

    1. No, I am not a holy name person.. It’s pure nonsense. Christ actual name is pronounced Hayah. or I AM. The name Jesus is Greek. It comes from the Hebrew and Aramaic name Yeshua (or Joshua). Ancient Greek did not have a “sh” sound, so the “sh” in Yeshua was changed to an “s”. Greek male names also typically added an “-s” ending, turning the name into Iēsous. Because the New Testament was written in Koine Greek, this is the exact form of the name used by the gospel authors. Christ is also Greek for Messiah. Incedently are you aware that the Bible that Jesus read was in GREEK, not Hebrew! Most of the quotes from the New Testaments are from the Septuigent Bible, not the Hebrew Bible…

That being said, Luke does not misquote Isaiah. When Jesus reads from the Isaiah scroll in the synagogue, we don’t know if he read from the Septuagint (Greek version of the Hebrew Masoretic text) or if he read from the Hebrew Masoretic text. He most likely spoke in Aramaic and perhaps read it in Hebrew if it was the Hebrew Bible. What we do know is that Luke uses the Septuagint. I compared the Septuagint and Hebrew text to the Greek New Testament and there are only a few places where it does not completely agree with the words and word order.

Here is a translation showing which lines and parts come from each version (GNT = Greek New Testament, LXX = Septuagint, MT = Masoretic text or Hebrew Old Testament):

      Luke 4:18-19 (Quoting Isaiah 61:1-2)
The Spirit of the (sovereign MT) Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me [to (heal the crushed LXX) bind up the broken of heart (MT)] to proclaim to the captives release and to the blind recovery of sight (GNT and LXX) to send out the captives in freedom [and to those who are bound, freedom (MT)] 19 to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.

It seems to me that Jesus may have been reading from the Hebrew text in the synagogue. Luke includes parts of the Hebrew text, even though the most accessible Bible to the first century Christians was the Septuagint.

As you can see, he includes parts from both. Luke omits “sovereign” (MT), and “heal the crushed and heart” (LXX) or “bind up the broken of heart” (MT). Only the Septuagint mentions recovery of sight for the blind. And only the Hebrew Bible mentions, “and to those who are bound, freedom.”

Luke includes a composite text from both the Septuagint and the Hebrew Bible. The only thing he doesn’t include is healing the broken hearted. But Luke did not misquote the Old Testament. Quoting in ancient times from other texts is nothing like our expectations today.

The ancients never really quoted verbatim like we do in the Western world today. They may be the from memory. And if they have the text in front of them, they may selectively quote, skipping lines that don’t enhance their message.

All of these were acceptable practices in the ancient world. So Luke did not have to quote the entire text from either the Septuagint or the Hebrew Bible. He may not have had the complete text from either the Septuagint or the Hebrew Bible.

It’s unlikely that Luke, a Gentile, could read Hebrew. Most Jews in the first century could not read Hebrew. But he may have had help if he had access to a Hebrew Bible from one of the apostles or they quoted it for him from the Hebrew text. Paul, whom he traveled with in the book of Acts was well-versed in the Hebrew text.

The whole point here is that God is everywhere, everyplace and in every language! Like Pablo answers to Paul, Saul and “hey Guy”. God also answers to those who love, obey and trust Them. Paul did not speak to the Romans I doubt in Greek! Probably Latin. I am sure he spoke to the Jews in Aramaic or Hebrew… It’s one of these doctrines in my opinion inspired by Satan, not God. God is Germanic. It;s the same as Theos in Greek, or Dues in Latin or Elohim in Hebrew. Demons are called god;’s (elohim)…

The best I can sum it up is what Paul refers to as useless arguments meant to divide, rather than unite. In Timothy 2:14: Paul charges believers not to “wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers”.2 Timothy 2:23: He instructs Timothy to “have nothing to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels”.Titus 3:9: Paul tells Titus to “avoid foolish controversies”

As for Jesus REAL NAME? I would suggest nobody knows it! He refused to let Jacob know. Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there…. To Moses, in Exodus 6:3, God tells Moses that He appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as El Shaddai (God Almighty), but did not make Himself fully known to them by His name Yahweh (the LORD)! If Abraham, who was the friend of God, didn’t need to know his name, neither do you, some holy roller, or me. In fact, Jesus himself says in Revelation 3:12: Jesus promises to the one who conquers: “I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem… and I will also write on him My new name.

Don’t be led astray, the ENGLISH BIBLE is sacred! Hundreds of righteous people died to bring you the Gospel. No other Bible in any other language took so many lives to bring it to us today! Never forget that.

      1. PT thanks for the response it was very long winded : ) and I have been studying for many many years.

Everyone remembers singing come by YAH and incidentally the King James Bible 1611 does have His name at the top on the front cover (they removed it in later translations) – when you study the Paleo Sinatic Hebrew or Cannanite and look at the pictorgraphs it’s beautiful and you can see the story unfolding of the Father. I think as I mentioned before YAHUAH translates to ‘I AM THAT I AM’ which is exactly who He told Moses He was. His name does not change in ANY Language neither does yours or mine.

Lets all come together as one and Love Him in His Truth and hope that one day we all get to be in our homeland with Him.
        Peace

How John Evolved from HebrewThe original root: The name started in ancient Hebrew as Yochanan. The Greek and Latin shift: When the name entered Greek as Ioannes and later Latin as Iohannes, the pronunciation shifted over centuries. The English arrival: Old French and Middle English eventually shortened and reshaped the Latin sound into the modern English name John.

How Moses Changes Across LanguagesLanguageFormNotesHebrewMoshe (מֹשֶׁה)The original biblical name from the Torah.GreekMoisis (Μωυσής)The Greek Septuagint translation added the “s” ending to fit Greek grammar.ArabicMusa (موسى)The Islamic and Arabic form of the prophet’s name.Latin / EnglishMosesAdapted directly from the Greek spelling and pronunciation.SpanishMoisésThe standardized Spanish biblical translation.RussianMoisey (Моисей)The Slavic adaptation of the Greek version.

As you see.. You simply do not understand the power of God… God is not hung on words, but thoughts and actions… “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
