The 5th Commandment and Today’s World (Transcript)

Does God say anything about emotionally or mentally abusive parents? Are we still supposed to honor them?  What does the only commandment with a promise attached to it really mean?

Should you always honor your father and mother as the Fifth Commandment says?

Hi, this is Bob Barney with theplaintruthtoday.com and I’m answering a question that someone sent to me asking me if are we always obligated to honor our father and mother? It is the fifth commandment after all, and it is the only commandment that has a promise. It says specifically, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God gives to you”

It goes on to say that it may go well with you and that you may live a long life in the land. And then it goes on to say, fathers do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in a disciplined way with instruction of the Lord.

(2:02) This is an important concept because when we are told to honor our father and our mother, I don’t believe we’re told to honor them if they’re drug addicts, for example, and to follow suit. We’re to honor our father and mother in a way that pleases God, and it pleases God to show respect to your elders. Today, unfortunately, too many of the younger generation does not see wisdom in their parents and grandparents. Instead, they see people who are flawed in many ways, and they seem to, or they think they have all the answers to life’s problems. The plain truth is they’ve never gone through what their parents and their grandparents probably have gone through in their life. This is quite new in my opinion.

At least when I grew up, I honored my mother and my father.

Of course, I had a very good mother and father.

(3:56) I didn’t have an alcoholic father or a mother who ran around town getting in trouble. So that might’ve made it easier for me to honor my father and my mother. For the most part, today, things are a little different, I think, because of the computer age and the internet age where younger people take to this new technology quicker and easier than older people. Although I know people in their 70s and 80s that are great with computers and internet and programming and everything. But for the most part, the younger generation, I mean, you take a kid to six years old, for pity’s sakes, you give them an iPhone and they can figure out that iPhone better than and find things to do with it. You’ve had an iPhone for 10 years and you’d never know it did these things! That’s a generational thing which sometimes can lead to I think, the younger generation into thinking that they are superior to their parents because they have knowledge that is more important or that they deem is more important.

Getting back to this point about honoring your father and mother…when you should do so and when maybe you should not do so…we’ll get into that. It was clearly very important to God. There are some reasons why it’s important to God and why it’s in the 10 commandments. Some Jewish leaders arrived in Jerusalem and found Jesus and asked him a question. And they say, why do your disciples disobey the ancient Jewish traditions? For they ignore the ritual cleaning of hand washing before they eat. Jesus looked at them and he replied, and why do your traditions violate the direct commandment of God? For instance, God’s law is that you are to honor your father and your mother and anyone who reviles his parents must die. But you say, even if your parents are in need, you may give their support to the church instead. And so by doing so, your manmade rule nullifies the direct commandment of God to honor and care for your parents. You are hypocrites. Well, did Isaiah speak of you when he said, these people, they honor me with their hearts, their lips, I’m sorry, but their hearts are far away from me. Their worship is worthless for they do nothing but teach manmade traditions. Most churches today preach churchianity or manmade traditions as I go into depth often on The Plain Truth. Now, one of the Jewish leaders said, good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life? You notice, by the way, I like to say this every time I read this. Jesus didn’t say, hey man, you already got eternal life. It’s a matter if you’re going to spend it in heaven or hell when you die. No, He didn’t say that. He said, if you are to enter into life, if, you know that word, if obey the commandments.

So the guy says, well, which ones? Jesus starts by saying, don’t kill, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t lie and honor your father and your mother and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus thought that was quite important to put in the honor your father and your mother as something he should say as what commandments to follow. Of course, you’re supposed to follow all 10.

(6:03) You know, some church people think that because He didn’t mention the Sabbath day, that means that He did away with us having to follow the Saturday Sabbath. He also didn’t mention honor, don’t use the Lord’s name in vain, but that doesn’t give you the license to do so. There are basic principles, in my opinion, as to why God created the fifth commandment and has made so much of a deal over the fifth commandment. God has given authority over the created order. The first is God the Father. You notice it’s a family type role. And Christ was his equal and now has become his son and is the creator of us all and the savior of us all. So God likens his creation of man, which, remember, is in God’s own image. We are to become God at the resurrection of our death.

That the family unit, therefore, is the most pivotal cornerstone of the unit that keeps the entire civilized world afloat. When you can break down the family unit, you can break down society and you can break down everything else. God realized that it was very important to maintain a family unit. Also, honoring our parents is another way that we honor God, because we are obeying God when we do so. God is ultimately our father. The church is ultimately our mother. We are to honor them, and we are to love them and cherish them and obey them. And when we do so with our parents, we are being structured in a way of learning how to obey obedience.

Now, the question that people are going to ask me is, what happens if my parents are not godly people? What happens if my father is an alcoholic, drunk? He beats my mother. He beats us up. He curses all the time. He doesn’t even believe in God. My mother may be a prostitute. She may sleep with all kinds of different men and she’s a bad example for me when I was growing up, or she was a bad example for my children, and I want nothing to do with her. Well, what’s the answer, Bob? Well, my answer is quite simple. God’s law does not force a child to obey any wrong or evil instructions that their parents give them to do.

A child can only obey a parent’s instructions when those instructions that the parent is asking for pleases the will of God.

(8:22) We know what the will of God is, and we know what pleases God. So, if our parents are telling us to do things to please God, then we should be honoring our parents because they’re trying to put us on the right road. Now, if our parents are telling us, you don’t want to follow the God of the Bible, the God of the Bible is fake, we came from monkeys, and there is no God, and you’re just wasting your time, and demand that you do not believe in God…well, that is not dishonoring your parents if you refuse to listen to that advice. Because ultimately, your father is the father God in heaven and not the father who created you with his sperm. A sperm donor can be a good father, but he’s not ultimately the father. The father is the God that we know is God the father.

Your parents have another meaning, and it has implications for parents. Because we also see, as Paul explains, fathers do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up with discipline and instruction in the Lord. See, God has given parents a great responsibility to be like God to their children. You know, it’s a good story back in Exodus when God, who is Jesus, is talking to Moses about letting his people go out of Egypt and talking to the Pharaoh. He says, I am going to make you, Moses, like God to the Pharaoh. You know, when you read that, you think, oh, God is letting some man be God to the Pharaoh. But actually, if you are a parent, if you are a father or a mother, your role is to play God to your infant children and to raise them up believing in the true God and making the right decisions. If you fail to do so, and you are actually harming your children’s relationship with Jesus Christ and God the father, then you are not to honor their wishes and do evil things yourself. However, there is a caveat to that. Even though your parents may not be good people, and even though they may err in many ways, and you decide by your relationship with God Almighty Himself that you are not going to obey your parents or follow their evil ways, you are still to respect that they are your parents.

(9:15) I want to get back to a story here last week when I was not happy with Marjorie Taylor Greene’s reaction to Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech. I am one who believes in the sanctity of an office. Joe Biden is an evil, criminal, gangster-type, mafioso leader who belongs in jail. When he’s standing up in Congress as the representative of the President of the United States, that office requires respect. So if I was sitting in that room when the President of the United States showed up, regardless of who he is, I would show respect. Would I clap if I think he is wrong? No, I would sit there emotionless, but I would not sit there and cause disrespect to the office of the President. This is the beginning of not being civilized and taking our country down a road that there is no coming back from once we get there. It’s the same when we get to our parents. We are to show them the respect of being parents. That doesn’t mean we have to listen to what they say to do if what they say to do is against God. But it does say we are to pray for our enemies. Well, if our parents have become our enemy because they don’t believe in our God and they instruct us not to, we’re still to pray for them. We are to be grateful because we are alive. We are a creature of God who got its spark of life from your father’s sperm and your mother’s egg, and you became a living being in the image of God Almighty with the possibility, if you live a good life and you believe in Jesus Christ and you obey his commandments, to have eternal life as God’s children.

This is my opinion, but I think you can prove this by reading certain passages in the Bible, especially the ones in Paul.

(12:01) Well, you know what? Your parents gave you that opportunity when they had sex and they created you. If that is the only good thing they ever have done in their whole life, and you turn out to be a good person, and you turn out to be someone who saves thousands of people, maybe, during a holocaust, or your words convert scores of people to believe that Jesus Christ is God and their Savior, then your parents’ copulation together creating you ends up being a miracle. So you should at least give credit to that miracle of conception that God was behind you being born and you following God’s will, doing God’s work. That is the simplest way I can explain about how you are to honor your father and mother. Hopefully, you have good parents that you can follow easily. Even if you don’t, you have to realize there is a structure in heaven that requires authority. The family unit is the ultimate authority on this earth over God, or under God, I should say. By obeying your parents and honoring them, that is why it’s a commandment and the only commandment that has a promise that you will have a long life.

I hope that answers that question.

I’d like to get into a subject about these questions. If you have questions about topics that you don’t understand, or you think you have an answer, but the answer doesn’t make sense to you, send me the question and I’ll answer you, or I’ll even do a show like this one here. I don’t have all the answers, and I’m going to get into some shows where I’m going to show you that I don’t have all the answers. There are things that God does that I don’t like, but you want to know what? I’m going to honor him because He is my parent. I’m going to honor His will and their will as best I can or I’m going to ask for forgiveness when I can’t. There are things I don’t understand because of my very small mind, because all human beings have a small mind compared to the mind of God. The mind of God is so incomprehensible to us, we just can’t figure out why God allows certain things.  Maybe we’ll get into that.

I do enjoy people sending questions because there are a lot of questions with simple answers that most churches and most authorities and biblical scholars try to make more complicated than they really are. Because the more complicated they make an answer, the more you depend on them for the answer. So, you know, I was happy to answer what I think honoring your father and mother means. It’s the basic unit that keeps the entire world put together that God created since the inception of mankind and even in heaven, there’s a hierarchy with God the Father. At one time, God the Son, Yahweh, Jesus Christ, the God of the Old Testament, was equal to the Father. As an act of love to us, for us, their children, Jesus Christ stepped out of the role of being equal to the Father, became a human being through a birth canal of a human woman, and became a man who lived a sinless life, and was killed and butchered and tortured for our sins. He was resurrected on the third day by the Father God, as promised, back to eternal life again. Now he is the God under God the Father, sitting at the right hand of God the Father. That God, who is Jesus Christ, is the God that we know of in the Old Testament and He is so powerful that destroyed the country Egypt and drowned all the soldiers in the Red Sea, that most powerful God, because He loves us so much, stepped down from his role and became subservient to the Father God, now known as our Father, so we can learn how to be subservient to our elders.

(16:34) This is why the Fifth Commandment is so important about honoring our parents, because our parents represent and symbolize both God the Father and the love that Jesus Christ has for us, to do for us what has been accomplished. That is stepping down from his ultimate authority and taking on the mantle of humanness, frailness, and suffering at the hands of evil people for our sin and bringing us back into the family of God as children of God, to become God when we are born again at his return and the resurrection of the dead.

I hope that answers that question…and if you have any questions, you can email me at plaintruthtoday@aol.com. 3

Any questions you have or any comments you have, something you think I may have said wrong, or even if you want me to explain something, I can write back to you or maybe do a show on it. It all depends on how important the question would be for others and not just for the person asking or relating their experience.

(18:31) I am really trying to simplify the Word of God, because God has made His Word simple, however, we, man, theologians and scholars and teachers of the law and teachers of religion alike, have complicated the law of God on purpose. Why? To make their jobs more important to us. We become subservient to them and we look up to a man to give us the answer than the Word of God, which we can read even in an easy-to-understand translation. Yes, there’s problems with all translations, including the King James translation but for the most part, any translation of the Bible that you read, with all the mistakes they may be in them, will give you the gist of what it is to be a real Christian and to be a follower of God the Father and Jesus Christ, and to be their children and to have a wonderful world tomorrow when we are born again into the family of God.

I now would like to take a few minutes here to go over again the focus of the Plain Truth. Theplaintruth.com is a news site. We are not a religion. I say this over and over and over again. We do not take advertisement like most newspapers do, because we want to be beholden to no one. So the only company that supports the plain truth is my wife’s and my company, our paint company, is where the money comes from. The company has done quite well, and so we have some money to try to get the word out. At the same time, The Plain Truth is not a religious site, it is a news site. We try to do something with the news that is more important than the news you’re listening to. I say over and over again, it doesn’t matter what happened yesterday if it doesn’t help you to live tomorrow. It’s frankly better to know what’s going to happen tomorrow than what happened yesterday.

You know, a tornado destroying a town out in the Midwest yesterday is not going to help you if you’re in line to get another tornado tomorrow and your life ends.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to listen to a news broadcast that can predict the future? Now, we can’t predict when the next tornado is going to hit and keep you alive that way. We can say that if you keep yourself with God, God has the power to protect you from such tragedy, but we can’t predict that news. There is news that we can predict that we know is going to happen, because the Bible tells us so.

(21:12) Jesus says in his own words, both in the Old and New Testament. The Plain Truth Bible, and we have a Plain Truth Bible that you can get on Amazon. It’s five volumes, and it’s quite costly because Amazon charges a lot of money. I think we make a dollar and a half per Bible. I am not trying to make money, but we have Christ’s words in red in the Old Testament as well as the New Testament, something no one’s done because no one’s realized that the God who is speaking in the Old Testament is Jesus Christ and not God the Father. You can easily prove that fact in the New Testament when Jesus Christ says plainly that no man has ever heard the voice of the Father or seen his form at any time except the Son who comes from the Father. Well, if no man has ever heard the voice of God or seen his form, who did Abraham talk to and relate with and see? Who was the presence of God that went by Moses on the mountain so Moses could see his hindquarters because he was so brilliant to see Moses would die if he saw him in his true godly state? It wasn’t the Father according to Christ. Who is the God that spoke to the prophets? Who is the God that wrote the Ten Commandments with his own fingers? Well, it’s none other than Jesus Christ in his preexistent form as the Lord Yahweh of the Old Testament. The God of the Old Testament, that all-powerful mean God that ordered the execution of scores of children and women, is the same being that became Jesus Christ, the God you think is a God of nothing but love. Well, you have a very shocking time coming when Christ returns and you find out that he’s not the effeminate, all-loving, gentle person that he’s portrayed by our churches and by the devil himself. The God of the Old Testament is Jesus Christ, and if you want to know Jesus Christ’s real nature, you need to read not only the New Testament where he explains himself better, baby, but you need to read the Old Testament and understand where he comes from because that God speaking in the Old Testament is Jesus Christ.

The Plain Truth is trying to give you the words that are important to you because it’s telling you what your destiny is. We know certain things are going to happen. We know there is going to be a temple built in Jerusalem. That’s news. We know that there is going to be a unified Europe under a beast called the King of the North or the Antichrist. That’s news. We know that the Antichrist is going to get his power from the Holy Roman Church, the Vatican. That’s news. We know there’s going to be a King of the South made up of a United States of Islamic countries from all of North Africa through the Middle East. Again, we’ll have a ruler, a despot, another, you know, Hitler type in the South called the King of the South. That’s news. That’s not religion. It’s news. It’s going to happen. It’s going to happen. You’re not going to stop it from happening because God says it’s going to happen. But what you can stop from happening is what’s going to happen to you and to this country.

(25:31) You know, we’re behind this June 14th day of prayer and fasting at Jeremiah3227.com. It’s on the Plain Truth Every Day. Click on that. Join that. Realize that if we go to God on June 14th, we’re just picking a day of course…you can do it any day, but it would be nice if we did it in unison. So, we come up with a day, which is Flag Day and it also happens to be Donald Trump’s birthday and we’re praying for this country. A further thought is that maybe it’s good to pray for the country on Flag Day. So on June 14th, to fast and pray. Fasting means eat no food or drink no water if you can. If you can’t, do the best you can. God is a God who understands the weakness of us all. Many people cannot do a fast, but to pray, to humble ourselves, and to ask God to save this country from the ruination that we’re going down today.

Again, I say this often, if you do not think we’re going down the road to hell in a handbasket today, then you are part of the problem, because we are.

The future of America, if we continue in the way we’re going, is not going to be very pretty. So go to theplaintruth.com every day. Then every morning at 7-11, you can listen to the podcast or read the corresponding transcript. I call it a broadcast on theplaintruthtoday.com. It’s its own website, but you get it from the plaintruth.com website. that’s every morning, Monday through Sunday, Saturday, I’m sorry, at 7-11 a.m. And we try to talk about relevant things, not just godly things, but sometimes the news. I’m going to have something on, you know, last week I had, what’s wrong with the Ten Commandments? Well, I’m going to have one in the next few days. I don’t know which day it’s going to be, which is going to be entitled, what’s wrong with the Bill of Rights? The other Ten Commandments, the Ten Commandments written by our forefathers, and they are like the Ten Commandments in many ways. And we’re going to get into that as well. And of course, there’s always Your Health Today, where you can read about trends in the medical industry that probably you’re not getting from the mainstream media because they’re getting all their money from Big Pharma.

I have news for you, Big Pharma does not have your best interest at heart, but we do.

(27:45) We’re trying to get you the news that will help you get well, stay healthy, and prevent yourself from catching some kind of disease and dying because the mainstream media is allowing it to be perpetrated on you. And you’re just a pawn in a big game that you’re going to be a loser. That’s Your Health Today, which you get from The Plain Truth.

Also, you see the first click you can do from theplaintruth.com is our Message Board, where anyone can post a message. If you are not registered and have a key, your messages do not go live. They have to be approved by a moderator. But if you have a key, or if you’re registered, that means then your messages will go live. A lot happens on the Message board. I really think that’s something you should go to every day along with The Plain Truth and these podcasts. So anyway, this is Bob Barney saying thank you for listening to me, and I hope you tell others about this broadcast each and every day. We’re on 7:11 in the morning every morning, Monday through Saturday, talking about things that I think are important to your life and the life of you and your family. So until tomorrow, this is Bob Barney saying thank you for listening.
