Are we on the Eve of Destruction? God’s Messages to Us in Songs, Movies and Books (Transcript)

Does God get His message out?

My contention then, and is still today, that God is not in every movie, God is not in every song, and God is not everywhere when it comes to pagan movies or pagan ideas and songs. God is not trying to get his message across in rap songs or in songs about violence against women or some of the stuff that we try to say is music today, which is not, but God is, as I said in a broadcast the other day, God is a modernist as well as he is a traditionalist.

The Plain Truth is so Happy That You Have Been Enjoying Bob’s Broadcasts.

Hi, this is Bob Barney with the 7-11 o’clock edition of the Plain Truth Today broadcast, brought to you by The Plain Truth dot com.

I wrote an article, I think it was back in, I’m looking it up here…first published in March of 2009 I want to discuss. The whole idea was that in the songs that we hear today or yesterday…the movies we watch, the books we read…

God knows what it is to get people to listen to him or listen to them because God is really Jesus Christ and God the Father that make up the Godhead, but we call them a ‘He’ which really is kind of like saying ‘them’..

…but God is able to get to us in books that we read, in music that we listen to, and also in movies that we watch. For example, even the movie as simple as it sounds, called, Oh God, with George Burns playing God, even that movie had a Godly message that God wanted to get across to people who really do not believe in God. It was a message for those that do not even read the Bible and who do not have a clue what’s even in the Bible. They may go to church on Sunday, but they only do it for a social event or because their parents took them there. So many Americans today just do not have God in their life.

(2:14) I know many children are growing up in Godless homes, not that the people are Godless. A lot of the people are good, sincere, and moralistic doing their best that they would think of themselves as having those attributes. They just do not have God in their homes. They don’t have their children read Bible stories, even kiddie Bibles. They don’t talk about God. They don’t mention God in their daily life. If you were to ask them, do you believe in God? Most of them would say, oh yeah, we believe in God. Do you go to church? No, not really. We don’t really believe that. It’s a bunch of nonsense. In many cases, they’re right.

(2:49) A lot of the reasons that people stay away from the churches, I always say, is because the churches themselves practice lawlessness. They practice a form of Christianity that is not the Christianity you find in the Bible. People see the hypocrisy of modern-day religious organizations and preachers and pastors or whatever they want to call themselves. They see the hypocrisy and they want nothing to do with it. In fact, the Bible talks about people who live a life in the name of Jesus Christ, who do more harm to that name than any witch or any demon could ever do, because they’re doing it in the name of Christ. People look at them and realize if this is what Christ is about, I want nothing to do with it. And actually, the Bible, especially in the New Testament, talks about that very fact.

(3:39) But going back to certain movies, certain songs, I’m going to play one today. I’m going to go over a song today that probably had a great influence on my life. I grew up, I was born in 1955, and I grew up in the really radical Vietnam era time. You know, Vietnam started before most people knew about it. By 1964, we started sending all kinds of troops to Vietnam under LBJ, even though John Kennedy started it. It got bigger and bigger and bigger. There were TV shows talking about getting out the message. There were TV shows and very favorite episodes of mine from the Twilight Zone. I think Rod Serling and those writers that helped him had their finger on God’s prophecies, because many of them concern the end of the world type prophecies of the Bible, including biblical terminology.

(4:37)  One was about Vietnam and some boy dying from being shot in Vietnam. Jack Klugman played the part of the father, it was called In Praise of Pip, where he’s saying, where is Vietnam? My kid is dying some 5, 8, 10, 10,000 miles away in this place called Vietnam and I don’t even know where it is. That’s where people were in 1964.

(5:04) So, you know, as I was growing up, and I grew up in a very traditional home. I had very good parents. I had a very good, blessed childhood. Vietnam was a topic that came along constantly in my life, but as a younger child in grammar school and elementary school, I didn’t think about it much. I started thinking about it more and more watching the Bob Hope Christmas specials, wondering why he was going to these places that were a war zone and performing for these kids, and that’s all they were, that were fighting in Vietnam.

(5:44) Of course, in 1967, something happened to me that really changed my experience about Vietnam. My brother had to either get drafted into the Army, which looked like he was going to do, or join the Air Force, which wound up being the case. He ended up in Vietnam at Da Nang Air Force Base, where we worried every day for his safety. they were shelled that night by the Kong, who were really the same people working for him in the daytime. As a result, I became more and more aware of what was happening with the Vietnam War, how inept President Lyndon Johnson was in trying to deal with the war.

(6:28) I can remember the day Richard Nixon was inaugurated president, January of 1969. I remember that day, I was sitting home watching TV and I actually thought, and I don’t think I’m wrong to this day, as a 13-year-old, looking at that TV screen saying, finally, I think we have somebody that knows what they’re doing who’s going to be president. I thought, maybe we can end this war and my brother would be safe.

(7:00) Contrary to all this revisionist history about Richard Nixon, we’ve done some shows already on the Plain Truth Today broadcast in the past several weeks about the lies surrounding Watergate and the lies surrounding Richard Nixon. Richard Nixon did one thing that he promised to do right away as president. He started to, and then finally before he was over his first four years before he was re-elected, ended the Vietnam War,..bringing all the Americans home. That is something that is overlooked by those liberals and those haters of Richard Nixon about his accomplishments.

(7:35) Richard Nixon had many accomplishments, but I do remember looking at the TV, seeing him being sworn in and thinking we finally have an adult in charge…someone that knows what he’s doing. That same summer, the summer of 1969, I was working, helping my father. He, on weekends, would help a woman. He used to run a farm before he went to work for the Nestle Company, and that woman still was running the farm, and she sold vegetables, which I ended up taking that business over in the 1970s, and it put me through college, and it eventually helped start my paint company.

(8:12) One day, I was riding with my father. I was, like I said, now I was 14 years old in the summer of 1969, and I was riding with my dad over to Poughkeepsie, New York, to buy some vegetables that we needed for the farm stand to complement the corn and tomatoes and squash and beans that she raised. We would get peaches and tomatoes…different items that we didn’t really grow, but we did this to make it worthwhile for people to stop and get everything they needed. It was what we did. But on the way over, I heard a song that forever changed how I looked at music. Before then, my favorite songs were love songs and happy songs and stuff like that, and after listening to this song and learning more about Bob Dylan, for example, and other songwriters who started writing what was called anti-war songs, I started listening to more songs that had a particular meaning. To this day, I still listen to songs that have a meaning in my life, and a meaning for the world.

(9:14)  The following song was recorded, and I’m going to play for you a recording of how this song came to be, and then later, I’m going to play the actual song. I’m going to go through it a little bit and show you that God gets his message out. What I want you to understand here is what the mission of The Plain Truth is all about. We are not a religion. We talk about religious subjects because God is part of the news. We are a news site bringing you what is relevant news and not what is BS news that you’re just indoctrinated with all day long on radio, TV, internet, you name it. You’re just indoctrinated. Newspaper. You’re indoctrinated with news you really, frankly, do not need. But going back in 1969, I remember reading the newspaper because my brother was in Vietnam…I read the paper every Friday. The Danbury News Times would publish how many Americans were killed that week in Vietnam, and then underneath it, the total for the war to date. I remember seeing numbers like in 1969 of something like 143 soldiers killed this week, and the total number is 26,452. The next week, it might be 252 soldiers died this week, and the total number was 30,198. We ended up, if everybody doesn’t know this, with 59,000 dead in Vietnam for a war we should have never, ever been in.

(10:56) If we learn anything, and maybe Donald Trump did learn this, it is that we don’t want to get in every single foreign war that our leaders want to get us into. Why? Because it does not turn out that well!

Getting back to what I was going to say was that the idea that God gets His message out in songs, in movies, and on the pages of the Plain Truth, because the Plain Truth is a news organization, that’s what we are doing, but we are giving you the part of the news that NBC, ABC, even Fox News don’t give you, and that is God’s hand behind the news, because God is involved in the news. Not only did God give you the past news, which is written in the Bible, but He’s also giving you future news. You can read the Bible and you can be rest assured, you are actually reading tomorrow’s headlines.

Here is a headline for you: United States under the Captivity of Europe…because that’s going to happen.

But going back to this 1969 song, I want you to listen to how this song came to be, how it was haphazardly put together and became a song that is actually the first song ever in the congressional record of a bill being passed…here it is…

(12:20 In the case of The Eve of Destruction, Eve of Destruction was a song that was going to be the B-side of Barry Maguire’s record. My partner, Phil Sloan, one morning comes in and plays me this song called The Eve of Destruction. Played it for Lou Adler, and Lou Adler said, you know, this is kind of a depressing song. He said, why don’t you guys throw Barry Maguire’s voice on it, and we’ll make it the B-side of a record, that way we’ll get it out of the way, because it is kind of good, but I don’t think radio is going to play it. So Adler says, let’s do something else. So I had the words to Eve in my back pocket, and I pulled them out, slid out the wrinkles, and hung it on the music stand,

(12:56) (Bob) and this is the actual recording artist. His name is Barry Maguire, and to give you a little background of Barry Maguire, he was a good friend of John Phillips from the Mamas and the Papas, and Maguire and McGuinn and Maguire couldn’t get much higher in the rock and roll song by the Mamas and the Papas. Well, McGuinn was Roger McGuinn from the Birds, and Barry Maguire, this whole group, the Birds, Barry Maguire, the Loving Spoonful, and Mamas and the Papas, they were all close friends, and they partied together, took drugs together, and this, who’s speaking now, is the actual person who sung the song Eve of Destruction, and his name is Barry Maguire, and just to let you know, so you may be a little surprised to hear this about God’s power over people, and this song has a powerful message, and in the 55 years since it was recorded, it’s as much moving of a song about God warning us against destruction as it was 55 years ago. But his name is Barry Maguire, and he’s today an evangelist. Yeah, he actually got out drugs, cleaned his act up, maybe the song had the beginning of it, but ended up believing in Jesus Christ, and he travels the world, and he still sings this song, but he travels the world and talks about Christ and the Eve of Destruction that is coming. So here’s Barry Maguire explaining how he recorded this song, reading it off of a slip of paper that was wrinkled.

(14:35) It has four chords in it, you know, so they went through it a couple of times. Yeah, oh yeah, we’ve got this line. He says, ah, I got it. We threw his voice on it. We were punching in lines all the way through. He really didn’t even know the song, and there’s a place in the song where I’m going, ah, you can’t twist the truth, and the reason I’m going, ah, is because I lost my place in the wrinkly paper, you know, in the dark. I couldn’t see it very well. We got a vocal good enough for him to take home, put it on a tape, and he would learn it. One tape. That’s all we had time for. I brought that tape into the office the next morning, and I’m playing it in my office. I always got in at around nine o’clock in the morning, no matter what time I worked at night. So I was the only one there, along with Jay Lasker, who was the president of Dunhill Productions at the time. He heard this thing that I’m playing. He said, let me have the tape. I want to take it into the office to listen to.

(15:21) About three hours later, I hear screaming and yelling going on and pounding on the walls in Lasker’s office, and I’m called in, and Adler is screaming at me, why, you know, what did you do with the Eve of Destruction tape? I said, you know, I gave it to Jay. He said, there has to be another one, and I said, why? He said, because I just heard it on the radio driving in this morning. It was on the number one station here in town at the time. It was KFWB. Monday morning, I got a call, I’m going to turn on KFWB, and Eve of Destruction is being played on the radio. So when we called the radio station to tell them to please take it off, you know, that it’s unfinished, they said, it’s the most requested record we’ve had since The Beatles, since I Want to Hold Your Hand, said, you know, we’re going to keep playing it. You can finish it up, get us a new one, but, you know, we’re going to just keep playing it. It exploded onto the charts. It just took off, and before they knew it, it was getting airplay all across the United States. I was still working at a record store, and that night when I went to the record store, the first three people that came into the store said, do you have this new record, Eve of Destruction? The first four or five phone calls I have said, do you have this Eve of Destruction? And so it was an early lesson that, you know, if something is meant to be, it’s meant to be. I wasn’t protesting, it was just a bunch of news. Are newspapers protesting newspapers? You know, is the news you see on television a protest news report? They’re just telling you what’s going on in the world. That’s all Eve of Destruction was. The Eastern world is exploding, bodies flaring, bullets loading, old enough to kill but not for voting, you know. What’s that gun you’re toting, and you tell me you don’t believe in it, you know? You know that Eve of Destruction was written into the, I think it’s the 26th amendment, to change the voting age of the United States. You know, it’s the first pop song that was ever written into the congressional record as a statement of, we need to change the voting age from 21 to 18th.

(Words to the song as it is playing…) Yeah, I don’t you understand what I’m trying to say, can’t you feel the fears I’m feeling today? If the button is pushed, there’s no running away, there’ll be no one to save, we’re the world in a grave.

(Bob) We’ll play that at the end of this thing, and we’ll have a link for the actual video, because the video is very powerful. But what he was talking about made it to the congressional record, and that is because in the Vietnam time, people went to war at 18 years old, and they could not vote. They could die for this country, 59,000 did, many of whom were under 21 years old and they could not vote! Unfortunately, it’s just awful.

(18:22)  So what I wanted to say to finish here, and then I’ll play the song and end the show with it, but what I wanted to say is God does get his message out. God is able to get to you even in your unbelieving state. If you open up your ears, you look at nature, you look at the trees and the leaves changing and the birds, and before a storm starts, you start seeing birds all flocking together. We were out before a big storm hit our house the other night, and watching the bluebirds go back in their homes, and they’re not even in their homes this time of year. They’re only in their homes during the spring when they’re going to raise babies. But all of a sudden, these bluebirds showed up out of nowhere, and they’re going into their homes, and all of a sudden, 25 minutes later, this really, really bad storm moved through our home, the ranch we have, or the farm ranch. I call it a ranch now. Even though we have no cattle, we have no animals or anything, but we got a lot of land. When you watch nature, you see God. When you see the perfect balance of things, you’re seeing God. When you watch the news unfold that God predicted some 2,500 years ago, 3,500 years ago, 5,000 years ago, then you got to start believing in God, and you got to start believing in the God of the Bible. it is the God of the Bible that proves himself. It’s not the God of the Quran. It’s not the God of the Mishnah, or the God of Hindus, or the God of Confucius, or the God of this one or that one. It ain’t the pagan gods that you read about in the Bible, you know, the God of Easter, Astarte, the God of all the Dagon, the fish god, who’s the Pope’s head is supposed to be Dagon’s fish god head. That’s another article we have in the Plain Truth called, where did the fish head of the Pope come from, or where that funny looking hat on the Pope come from, and you’ll find out it comes from Dagon, a pagan god that God abhors us following.

(20:21)  But people want to believe in false gods, they want to believe in witches, they want to believe in demons, they want to believe in all kinds of spiritual things, they want to believe in yoga, they want to believe in chanting, they want to believe in Hare Krishna, you name it, but very few people want to not only believe in God, a lot of people believe in the true God, but want to obey God.

(20:42) God tells us we have to obey his laws in order to find a true blessing, and because we are not doing so as a nation, and we are going to continue not doing so in the future, maybe in the short run, for a while, we can get our act back together and be with God, but in the long run, we know what the final newspaper headline is going to be for this nation that we’ve fallen into the hands of our enemy. It will be as it is said, that we have become captive to a foreign land, which is going to be Europe, the Holy Roman Empire, and we are going to lose all our rights, all our freedoms, and we’re going to watch the politicians and leaders who sold us down the river get themselves slaughtered and murdered, you know, like Saddam Hussein found himself being hung by the same people he used to rule. This is what happens to dictators and tyrants. They die. They die to violent, terrible deaths, and God’s going to make sure it happens.

I do want to get to you to pay attention to what’s going on around you, because God is talking to you.

Now, do you listen? That’s another question.

God talks to probably more people than whoever ends up listening, and then someday on judgment day, when people say, well, why didn’t you tell me? Well, I did. When did you tell me? Well, I told you when you saw this, and when you watched this movie, when you read this book, and when you heard this song…

(16:53) (Song playing) The eastern world, it is exploding, violence flaring, bullets loading. You’re old enough to kill, but not for voting. You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun you’re toting? And even the Jordan River has bodies floating, but you tell me over and over and over again, my friend. Ah, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction. Don’t you understand what I’m trying to say? Can’t you feel the fears I’m feeling today? If the button is pushed, there’s no running away. There’ll be no one to save. We’re the world in a grave. Take a look around you, boy. It’s bound to scare you, boy. And you tell me over and over and over again, my friend. Ah, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction. Yeah, my blood’s so mad, feels like coagulating. I’m sitting here just contemplating. I can’t twist the truth; it knows no regulation. A handful of senators don’t pass legislation. And marches alone can’t bring integration. When human respect is disintegrating, this whole crazy world is just too frustrating. And you tell me over and over and over again, my friend. Ah, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction. Think of all the hate there is in red China. Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama. Ah, you may leave here for four days in space. But when you return, it’s the same old place. The pounding of the drums, the pride and disgrace. You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace. Ain’t your next dog neighbor, but don’t forget to say grace. And tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction.

(Bob) And we are someday in our lifetime, maybe, maybe in your child’s or grandchildren’s lifetime, this nation is going to be on the eve of destruction. It’s a shame to have to be the one to tell you this, but it’s going to happen because God tells us it’s going to happen. It’s going to happen because God’s people, which we are God’s people, we are lost Israel…God’s people continually refuses to accept God’s will and God’s laws. We want to go our own way. We want to go our own way until we’re 105 years old, if we live that long. We want to be just like this teenager who tells mom and dad he knows, or she knows what’s best. And that is human nature. And that is human nature that’s going to bring about our destruction.

The good news, and there’s always good news, is God knows it.

(26:36) God knows our character and knows that we lack good character. God has a plan. The plan is part of the gospel, part of the good news, the good newspaper called the plain truth. The plan is that God has already qualified His son, Jesus Christ, his co-equal God of the past to replace the God of this world who God put here many years ago. I don’t know how many years ago, but Satan the devil, according to your Bible, is the God of this world. Jesus Christ came 2,000 years ago now to replace him as the future God of this world and the Lord of Lord and the King of Kings.

God is working out a plan to save you from yourself because we are unable to do so because of sin and because of human character…because of greed and avarice and an unwillingness to follow God’s laws and to fall under God’s commandments.

That is the plain truth.

(27:45) It’s a sad thing to have to say, but it is what is coming. There’s going to be many tears, there’s going to be a lot of sorrow, there’s going to be a lot of things going wrong in everyone’s life when that time comes. However the good news is this, Jesus Christ will return as promised. He will come like the sun. You will see God coming with all his angels in plain sight and the whole world will see it, including all of those who poo-pooed the idea that Jesus Christ is alive today because He is. God is coming. He’s coming to save us from ourselves, to save us from the war that would end all wars, the war that would destroy all of mankind if God did not intervene. God is going to intervene!

This is Bob Barney, and I want to just again give a message for theplaintruth.com. It’s the only place you’re ever going to go to that’s going to give you everything you need to know to show you what is coming in the headlines tomorrow. So please go to theplaintruth.com every day, plaintruthtoday.com for these broadcasts. Be aware, be informed, be in the know, understand what’s happening. If you could do anything else, if this broadcast leads you to any other understanding, realize the God of the Bible is real. Jesus Christ is real. Everything predicted is going to come to pass and you can be prepared for it or you cannot be prepared for it. Either way it’s going to be better if you know what to do and what you should be doing.

That’s it for today’s show. A little somber over yesterday’s show, but I want people to realize what their future is according to God in God’s newspaper.

Thank you for listening and we’ll get back here 7:11 again tomorrow. Bye-bye.
