Being both a fan of vintage photos and oddities of nature – I found this very intriguing. These are rare photos of  Niagara Falls… Frozen nearly solid!

Nobody knows the exact date but experts pin the photo below to 1911 – since that was when the river feeding the falls happen to freeze solid.

(And yes, those are people walking on the ice – just feet from the edge)

This photo is said to be from 1890 or 1902. Thousands climbed up to the frozen falls to take a look.

Sadly some died during what is known as the 'Ice Bridge Disaster'in 1912.

This photo is said to be from 1936. It took a while to notice how many people are in this picture – above and below the falls.

This is of unkown origin – but I liked it.
(I would guess 1936 by the way the falls seem to match the photo above.)

This has also happened in the recent past.
In 2009 the falls froze over as well. Too bad they don't let people
walk all over it anymore. Ahh… the good old days.

  1. The formation of Niagara Falls was a slow process that still continues today. The annual freezing and thawing of the Niagara River wears away at the rocks under the surface and gradual erosion and periodic rockfalls steadily move Niagara Falls farther upstream. Modern influences, however, have caused the Falls to wear away less quickly. Remedial work has been done to preserve the Falls and the volume of water has been reduced by diversion for hydroelectric power….
