Why did the year 1752 have only 354 days in the British Isles and North America? Why did people in those countries go to bed on the night of 2 September and wake up on the morning of 14 September, despite only a few hours having passed and why have these kinds of time jumps (or lost time if you prefer) happened eighteen times around the world between 1582 and 1924? In this video from History Calling I reveal all, including whether another time jump will occur in the future. The video will discuss the changes to the calendar made by Julius Caesar, Pope Gregory XIII, the Council of Nicaea and various monarchs and Parliaments around the world and by the end of it I will have the workings of the Gregorian calendar explained to you and even the Julian Calendar explained as well, despite the fact that it is barely used any more. I’ll show you how people dated letters when the two calendars were in force and tell you once and for all how many days there are in a year, why we have leap years and why the first day of the year used to be 25 March, not 1 January.
