While others rushed to the lifeboats as the ship sank, millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim stoically sat sipping brandy with his personal secretary Victor Giglio, declaring they were 'prepared to go down like gentlemen'.

It was one of the most haunting tales to emerge from the Titanic disaster. American businessman. A native of Philadelphia and son of mining industrialist Meyer Guggenheim. First class passenger who perished at sea in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Faced with impending death Mr. Guggenheim and his valet surrendered their lifebelts to a ship's steward and returned to their cabin suites to change into formal evening attire. Guggenheim is best remembered for making the remarks "We've dressed in our best, and are prepared to go down like gentlemen" and "Please tell my wife I did my best in doing my duty." Mr. Guggenheim and his valet were last seen seated in deck chairs sipping brandy and smoking cigars. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
