Only hours after celebrating son Ty, 20, winning Nascar's Xfinity Series championship- Son of Joe Gibbs, whose other son JD died at 49 years old as well.
Coy Gibbs, the co-owner of Nascar's Joe Gibbs Racing, has died aged 49 just hours after his son Ty, 20, won the Nascar Xfinity Series championship.
Ty Gibbs won the championship at Phoenix Raceway in Arizona on Saturday night and was set to race again in the Nascar Cup Series finale for Kurt Busch on Sunday but he was withdrawn over a family emergency.
But just hours later, on Sunday morning, Joe Gibbs Racing confirmed that the racer's father had died in his sleep.
'It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) went to be with the Lord in his sleep last night,' the organization said in a statement.
'The family appreciates all the thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time.'
After his son's victory, Coy had told reporters about the pride he and his wife felt watching on. 'Watching it today, yeah, just to see his determination,' Nascar quoted him as saying.
'I think he's got skills and he's determined. It definitely made me proud. I think it made my wife — we were both proud, just because he just hammered down and did his job. If he wants to do this for a living, he's going to learn how to do that.'
Coy Gibbs was the son of NFL Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs, who won three Super Bowl titles with Washington and went 154-94 in 16 seasons with the team.
