No. 2 House Republican Steve Scalise won the GOP nomination for speaker, though he still faces opposition from within the party and it’s not clear when he could have the votes to win the job on the House floor.
Republicans held a secret closed-door ballot Wednesday morning after days of drama and infighting.
Scalise, the majority leader who is battling blood cancer, beat out House Judiciary Chairman and Trump ally Jim Jordan in a 113-99 vote.

Tensions between McCarthy and Scalise are an open secret in Washington.
They first boiled over publicly when conservatives became angry at the a deal McCarthy did with Joe Biden on the debt ceiling.
Instead of involving Scalise in debt ceiling talks, McCarthy relied on his close friends, Rep. Garrett Graves, R-La., and Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., to negotiate with the White House.
Both Scalise and Jordan admitted that they would need to put a continuing resolution (CR) – a bill to extend government funding at FY 2023 levels and avert a government shutdown while they hash out a longer term spending plan.
