The former head of Social Security has made a dire prediction that the program is facing an unprecedented threat and is on the brink of collapse.

It comes as the Trump administration plows ahead with its efforts to shrink the size of the federal government through job cuts and sweeping changes within the Social Security Administration (SSA) under Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

DOGE’s mission is to slash government spending but critics argue that such drastic measures are now also dismantling a system that has safeguarded generation.

The SSA has been a pillar of stability for Americans for more than eight decades, ensuring that monthly benefit payments arrive on time.

But former SSA Commissioner Martin O’Malley is now forecasting a complete implosion within the next 30 to 90 days, as payments become disrupted for more than 72.5 million Americans who rely on the program.

‘Ultimately, you’re going to see the system collapse and an interruption of benefits. People should start saving now,’ O’Malley urged retirees, the disabled and others who depend on Social Security – including for retirement and disability benefits.

O’Malley previously testified before Congress about the urgent need for Social Security modernization and is now warning that DOGE’s interference is leading to staffing shortages, IT failures, and office closures.

‘Those intermittent IT outages may happen more frequently and for more extended periods of time until there is a system collapse and an interruption of benefits,’ he cautioned during an interview with CNBC.
