Angela Merkel has symbolically urged Europe to defend 'democracy' and 'freedom' as Germany is today marking 30 years since the Berlin Wall fell. She was seen laying a flower in a standing section of the wall at Bernauer Strasse. European leaders are attending ceremonies across Berlin recalling the peaceful protests that piled pressure on East Germany's government to allow its citizens free passage to the west on November 9 1989.
