He walked around it, seemingly inspecting it at a casual pace, and then, after a short time, took out a piece of chalk and marked an “X” on a specific spot on the generator. Steinmetz sent Ford a bill for $10,000 (which, in today’s money, would be well over $150,000). Ford was surprised by the cost, especially since Steinmetz had only spent a short amount of time on the site. Ford asked Steinmetz for an explanation. Steinmetz’s reply was clever and to the point. He said: “For chalking the X: $1. For knowing where to chalk: $9,999.”
