Elon Musk announced a plan to provide SpaceX shares for children across the United States in 2027. In an October 19 post on X, the SpaceX founder and CEO said he would give one of his shares to every child in America.

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said on Monday he’ll give every child a share in the company in 2027.

“This will be the first of many,” Musk wrote.

The announcement describes a future giveaway rather than a completed distribution. For now, families still need details about how the proposed gift would work.

SpaceX shares for children: What Musk announced

Musk’s pledge concerns shares from his personal ownership in SpaceX. According to CNBC’s reporting, an August securities filing showed that he owned approximately 4.8 billion shares.

His announcement proposes giving each child one share. However, it does not mean that each child would receive an equal portion of his entire stake.

The proposed giveaway would reach a large population. The original report cites US Census figures showing approximately 72 million children under age 18 in the United States.

How much could the giveaway be worth?

Using that population estimate and the stock’s closing price on the preceding Friday, the report valued the proposed gift at about $10.5 billion.

That figure describes the combined estimated value of the shares. It does not represent the amount each child would receive.

Also, the estimate is a snapshot based on a particular stock price. The eventual total could differ depending on the share price and the number of recipients when the transfers occur.

A share represents an ownership interest in a company. Its market value can change, so the announcement does not promise a fixed cash payment.

What families still need to know

Although Musk identified 2027 as his target, his brief announcement left practical questions unanswered. Families still need confirmed information about eligibility, distribution and any steps parents must take.

For example, the post does not explain how organizers would identify recipients or deliver shares to them. It also does not provide a specific distribution date.

Until organizers publish those details, the announcement remains a pledge. Parents should distinguish Musk’s stated intention from an available enrollment process.
