HMIEL FAMILY GIVES FIRST NATIONAL TELEVISION INTERVIEW TO NASCAR RACE HUB THURSDAY ON SPEED™

BYRNES: ‘SHANE’S MESSAGE IS SO POSITIVE … IT INSPIRED EVERYONE IN THE ROOM’

Banned by NASCAR for life after failing three drug tests, race car driver Shane Hmiel was en route to resurrecting his racing career when he suffered a near-fatal accident while trying to qualify for a USAC race in Terre Haute, Indiana. Originally given only a 10 percent chance at survival, Hmiel remains paralyzed but continues to defy the odds.

This week, the Hmiel Family opens up to a national television audience for the first time as a special feature hosted by Steve Byrnes headlines Thursday’s edition of NASCAR Race Hub on SPEED (7 p.m. ET).

“I started working on this in January,” said Byrnes, who first met Shane’s father, Steve, in 1985. “I wanted to go into the interview as open-minded as possible. I didn’t have a point of view. I just wanted to listen … and Shane opened up about everything.

“What I walked away with was, here is this guy in the prime of his life … who had turned his life around and now (after the accident) has every reason to be bitter,” Byrnes added. “But his message is so positive … it inspired everyone in the room.”
