Welcome to The Plain Truth, I’m Bob Barney.
Before 9/11 and the so-called War on Terror, there was another conflict that scarred a generation of Americans – a war that stretched on longer than any before it at the time, dividing families, churches, and the very soul of this nation. I’m talking about Vietnam.
From the first quiet advisory missions in the 1950s to the chaotic fall of Saigon in April 1975, nearly 58,000 American sons and daughters would never return home – killed or missing in action. Another quarter of a million South Vietnamese soldiers died fighting alongside us. And what set this all in motion? An incident in the dark waters of the Gulf of Tonkin – an event still debated to this day – was used by President Lyndon B. Johnson to convince Congress to open the floodgates of war, authorizing American blood and treasure to be poured into Southeast Asia.
What followed was not just a military conflict but a cultural earthquake. Protests erupted in our streets, trust in our government began to unravel, and the media – for the first time – brought the brutality of war straight into our living rooms.
In today’s feature, hosted by historian Colin D. Heaton, we take a hard look back at this pivotal moment in Forgotten History, a 10th Legion Pictures Production. Was America led into this war by truth – or by political maneuvering and deception? And what lessons have we really learned, if any?
Stay tuned. This is The Plain Truth – and the truth, no matter how uncomfortable, matters.
